Dental implants

A post placed in the jawbone with a crown on top replaces a missing tooth. We look at the scans first and tell you whether you would need a bone graft.

What it is · who it suits

A new root, without filing down the neighbours

The implant post stands in for the root and the crown for the visible tooth. Unlike a bridge, the teeth on either side are left alone.

  • You have lost one or more teeth and want to chew on that side again.
  • A removable denture keeps slipping.
  • There is enough jawbone, or it can be built up — we check on the scans.

Benefits

Why people choose implants

  • Steady chewing

Fixed in place; nothing to take out at meals or at night.

  • Neighbours left intact

No need to file down the teeth next to the gap, as a bridge would.

  • Helps keep the bone

The post takes chewing load, which slows bone loss where the tooth was.

  • Cleaned like a real tooth

    Brush and floss as usual.

Options

One tooth, a few, or a whole arch

The plan depends on how many teeth are missing and how much bone there is.

  • One missing tooth

One post, one crown. Usually two or three visits, a few months apart.

  • Several teeth in a row

Two posts carry a three-tooth bridge, so you need fewer posts than missing teeth.

  • A whole arch

Four to six posts hold a fixed full-arch bridge. Needs a thorough exam and 3D scan first.

How it works

Five steps, each with a rough timeframe

Timings are typical, not promises; you get a specific schedule after the exam.

  1. Exam and 3D scan

Usually about 60 minutes. We check the bone and where a post would go.

  2. Plan and written quote

You take home the plan, the number of visits and a written quote.

  3. Placing the post

Usually 60–90 minutes per post, under local anaesthetic.

  4. Healing time

Usually 3–6 months. A temporary tooth can fill the gap meanwhile.

  5. Fitting the crown

Usually two visits: impressions, then fitting and adjusting the bite.

Before and after

Sample cases

The frames below are placeholders. The clinic replaces them with before-and-after photos of real cases whose patients agreed to publication; each case states the situation and the approach, never a promised result.

  • Before-and-after placeholder, not a real case

    A missing lower molar

Situation: a lower first molar lost years ago, enough bone.

Approach: one post and an all-ceramic crown, three visits over about four months.

  • Before-and-after placeholder, not a real case

    Replacing an old bridge

Situation: a leaking three-tooth bridge on weak supporting teeth.

Approach: remove the supports, graft bone, two implants carry a new bridge.

  • Before-and-after placeholder, not a real case

    A loose removable denture

    Situation: most upper teeth missing.

Approach: four posts, a temporary fixed bridge, then the final porcelain one.

Your dentist

Who will place your implant

  • Dr Lam Thu An

    Restorations and implants

Leads the clinic's implant and crown work. At the first visit Dr An goes through the scans with you and sketches where each implant would sit before money comes up, then stays with the case through the last check-up. (Dentist, photo and bio are placeholders.)

Questions

Before and after treatment

Does placing the post hurt?

You are numbed, so most people feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Some soreness for a few days is common; we give you medication and eating advice.

How do I prepare?

Tell us about any medication, especially blood thinners and diabetes medicine. Eat something light beforehand.

What about aftercare?

Soft food for a few days, no smoking, gentle rinsing as instructed, and keep your follow-up appointments.

Who should not have implants?

Head and neck radiotherapy, uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking need a careful assessment; sometimes another option suits better.

Is the crown on the implant covered?

The crown or bridge on an implant has its own repair-or-redo warranty. See the warranty policy.
